I have MDS, short for Myelodysplasia. Huh? whaa?

Hi. If you have MDS, you know what that stands for. If not, it stands for Myelodysplasia, a fairly rare bone marrow disorder where your body does not produce enough blood cells for your body. And, it can develop into Leukemia.

My doctor began noticing I had low blood platelets about a year ago, and had me going in for blood tests every couple of months; they kept dropping every time.
Finally, it got to the point that I needed a blood transfusion, and that helped. However, it wasn't good enough to 'fix' my blood platelets problem, and they suspected serious illness. I had a bone marrow biopsy, and that's when they found the MDS.

Of course, the doctor immediately went into his 'let's get you on expensive drugs' mode, and suggested a couple of different things to try, including a bone marrow transplant! At this stage of the game! I came home and did some research...Thank God for the Internet and real information about the drugs and procedures they want you to have! One medicine alone that was recommended to me, ( and not guaranteed to retard the illness) which would have been taken for about three weeks...costs over $400. And that's ONE PILL! Multiply that by 21 days and...wow.

Believing that our bodies have great recuperative powers, I have always looked at drugs as the last resort ( even though I am on four prescriptions for my heart!) I believe nutrition is the answer to what ails us. I also believe that you can abuse your body so much that perhaps that once-recuperative power just gets too overwhelmed, and that's when the body dies (or gets to the point that it needs four heart meds to keep going.)

(I might also add that I am a believer in the recuperative power of God's Salvation thru Jesus Christ.)

I was diagnosed with MDS about 10 weeks ago, and am still processing what this means to my body. In a nutshell, nothing good. I have a 10-30% chance of developing Leukemia somewhere down the line, but I can't worry about that right now. What I can do right now is nourish my body to fight this as best I can. Hence, the reason for this blog! I am going to set out to see what I can do via nutrition to combat this blood disorder that I have. In my next post you will see how I arrived at the nutritive plan that I have begun. Please keep reading.
